Ford Ranger tops Aussie sales charts, again

Ranger outpaces HiLux for third consecutive year; Everest, Mustang, Transit Custom strong

6 Jan 2026

FORD Australia has beaten Toyota to the top spot on Australia’s new model sales ladder for a third consecutive year, with its Ranger light commercial utility outselling the Toyota HiLux by a convincing 5258 units.

The Ranger amassed 56,555 unit sales across the 2025 calendar year to stave off competition from the recently updated HiLux (51,297 unit sales), and other segment rivals, including the Isuzu D-Max (26,839), Mitsubishi Triton (18,900), and BYD Shark 6 (18,073).

“To have the Ford Ranger named Australia’s best-selling vehicle for the third consecutive year is a landmark moment for our brand, in a year when we proudly celebrated 100 years in Australia,” said Ford Australia marketing director Ambrose Henderson.

“This is a clear validation of the hard working and talented Australian-based design and engineering team who are focused on delivering for our customers every day.

The news comes as Ford celebrates its position as Australia’s second-favourite new vehicle importer, the Blue Oval brand ranking second behind Toyota with total calendar year sales of 94,399 units (and 7.8 market share points) behind the Big T’s 239,863 units (and 19.8 market share points).

While sales of the Ranger and HiLux are down overall (by 9.6 and 4.1 per cent respectively), the numbers contributed to a strong year for the Australian new car market, which finished 2025 on a record high of 1,241,037 unit sales.

Beyond the Ranger, Ford enjoyed success with its Everest SUV line, Mustang sports car, and Transit Custom light commercial van.

The Everest was Australia’s number-one Large SUV segment seller for a second consecutive year – with 26,161 unit sales and an outright fifth position – pipping the Toyota LandCruiser Prado the narrowest of margins (55 units).

Ford’s high-performance Mustang range was Australia’s favourite sports car in 2025, amassing 4052 units – or 58.6 per cent of the segment overall.

Despite a recent price increase, Mustang sales grew by an impressive 176.6 per cent across the past calendar year, the model outpacing its nearest sports segment rival, the BMW 2 Series, by an impressive 2877 units.

Adding to Ford’s windfall, the Transit Custom scored its best sales year on record, tallying 3447 unit sales and 15.5 market share points for the 2025 calendar year – and securing second place in its segment (behind the Toyota HiAce with 11,073 unit sales).

“Beyond Ranger, Ford also secured the number two brand position overall,” added Mr Ambrose.

“This is thanks to Everest leading the large SUV segment for the second year in a row, Mustang continuing to be the most popular sports car in the country, and Transit Custom achieving its best full year on record.

“This shows the incredible strength of our current lineup and is a testament to the way our Ford customers use their vehicles every day – from getting the job done on the worksite, to enjoying a classic Aussie road trip.

Mr Ambrose said he looked forward to the sales achievements of the Ford Australia dealer network continuing in 2026 as new products like the Ranger Hybrid and Ranger Super Duty entered the market.

Speaking with GoAuto this week, Mr Ambrose said he was confident Ford Australia could continue the momentum shown in 2025 as 2026 gains pace, suggesting the current portfolio of vehicles is well matched to Australian buyer requirements.

“By continuing to offer customers vehicles that not only meet their needs, but vehicles they truly want, we’re confident in our product line-up and dealer network’s ability to deliver strong results in Australia’s fiercely competitive new car segment,” he said.

“Backed by our local design and engineering team who are continuously innovating on Ranger and Everest, plus a dealer network of over 180 sites nationwide, we are confident in maintaining our momentum.

When asked if the Ranger Super Duty would grow the overall volume of Ranger models sold, or simply spread Ranger sales volumes across a broader audience, Mr Ambrose said that only time will tell.

“With the introduction of the Ranger Super Duty to Ford’s commercial vehicle line-up comes new capability previously unavailable in the mid-size pickup segment,” he told GoAuto.

“This in turn brings new customers to our brand, as is evident with the strong December VFACTs results.

In December, Ford sold a total of 5255 Ranger variants, including the all-new Super Duty. That figure is 24.2 per cent higher than the same time last year, suggesting the Super Duty line is doing its fair share of the heavy lifting.

And while the success of the Ranger and Ranger Super Duty is hard to ignore, it is the sales of the Ranger Plug-In Hybrid Mr Ambrose seems less inclined to discuss.

Ford Australia has not provided a break-down of which Ranger models sell best, though anecdotal evidence suggests the Plug-In Hybrid range has not had the cut-through the importer had hoped for.

“While we don’t share specific variant model sales results, Ranger Plug-in Hybrid continues to meet our expectations, as it does with our customers who have chosen the Ranger Hybrid for its mix of towing, payload, and off-road capability that has become synonymous with the Ranger brand,” he concluded.

Ford Australia also lost ground across model lines that include the locally re-engineered F-150 (down 67.4 per cent to 792 unit sales) and all-electric Mustang Mach-E (down 28.2 per cent to 483 units), with Tourneo and Transit Bus sales steady or unchanged (see table below).
