ZF OutlanderAug 2004

ZF Outlander

Mitsubishi’s Outlander 4WD wagon finally received the engine it needed to compete on an equal footing in the fiercely-fought compact SUV segment.Launched with a wheezy 100kW 2.4-litre engine in early ‘03, the ZE Outlander never set the small SUV market on fire. The new 2.4-litre MIVEC engine, more equipment, revised pricing, upgraded brakes, subtle styling changes and the addition of a flagship VR-X variant greatly increased the Mitsubishi’s appeal.MIVEC stands for Mitsubishi Innovative Valve lift and timing Electronic Control, and it helps deliver 120kW of power at 5750rpm, and 220Nm of torque at 4000rpm.According to Mitsubishi, the result is improved acceleration, and an ADR81/01 combined fuel economy figure of a respectable 10.8 litres per 100km.Outlander’s beefed up engine continued to be mated exclusively to Mitsubishi’s INVECS II Smartlogic four-speed auto with sequential-shift manual override, while final drive remains 4.625:1 and Outlander’s Lancer Evo-based centre viscous coupled full-time AWD system with variable 50/50 torque split continues unchanged, as does Outlander’s impressive 205mm ground clearance.Three-channel, four-sensor ABS with EBD became standard across the range, adding to the dual front and side airbags (the latter optional on base LS), front seatbelt pre-tensioners, seatbelt force-limiters on all five belts, an emergency door unlock on impact function and childproof rear doors.Outlander’s MacPherson strut front and trailing arm rear suspension systems (both with anti-roll car) continue unchanged, although VR-X receives its own specific, sportier tuning.A redesigned tailgate with a larger rear window, diagonal bars in the grille, projector-style headlamps, front and rear bumper garnishes and revised trim and fabrics inside complete the changes. In late 2005 the sports-themed VR-X model gained an in-dash multi-media unit and silver highlights to its bumpers and side skirts.

A5 8P A3 Series I

Audi didn’t mess around with its successful A3 formula for the second-generation version, adding edgier styling and more room to a three-door only body. But, being based on the A5 Golf V, the platform was all new and much improved over the old A3, mainly due to a multi-link rear suspension. The base 75kW/148Nm 1.6 continued, but the 1.8s vanished for Audi’s excellent new 2.0 FSI four-cylinder units in regular (110kW/200Nm) or turbocharged (TFSI – 147kW/280Nm) guises. All offered six-speed manual or automatic gearboxes – with the TFSI offering Audi’s superb double-clutch DSG auto in lieu of the regular Tiptronic. The DSG was also the star of the 103kW/320Nm 2.0 TDI four-cylinder turbo-diesel model, as well as the expensive range-topper, the 184kW/320Nm 3.2 V6 Quattro – with Haldex part-time all-wheel drive.Audi parred back the three-door range to just the 1.6 manual and 2.0 FSI automatic in late ’05, as the Sportback five-door hatch released from February took over most of the A3’s duties.AUDI'S first S3 three-door carved itself a solid reputation for being a seriously rapid European hot-hatch with high Audi quality, a peaky turbocharged four-cylinder engine and even more agile, neutral all-wheel drive handling than its sister model, Volkswagen's V6-powered Golf R32.For 2007 Audi returns after a four-year hiatus with a 188kW/330Nm 2.0-litre turbo four (195kW/350Nm in Europe) that eclipses the nose-heavier R32, brings more equipment and takes the bigger new (since 2004) three-door A3 body to new levels of dynamic proficiency. The best part is that at $64,500 the latest S3 is almost $2000 less expensive than the model it replaces. As before, it features a close-ratio six-speed manual transmission and beefier brakes, as well as a higher-class cabin and a comprehensive standard safety armoury. In October 2008 Audi launched its S3 Sportback hot hatcrange. In Audi parlance, Sportback refers to a five-door hatch. It joins the existing three-door and shares its mechanical bits. This is good news because that includes a 2.0-litre TFSI turbo four-cylinder that punches out 188kW. That is enough to shoot this premium hot hatch from 0-100km/h in just 5.8 seconds. The only transmission available is a six-speed manual.Power is sent through all four wheels using Audi’s quattro system using a clever Haldex clutch. At a shade below $70,000 the S3 Sportback is not cheap, but it is a serious competitor to the Subaru WRX STI and Mitsubishi Lancer EVO MR and is a lot more luxurious.

BA GrandisJul 2004

BA Grandis

Now in its fourth generation, Mitsubishi elected to rename the Nimbus seven-seater Grandis. It was the first all-new vehicle to reach Australia with Mitsubishi’s bolder exterior design and stands as a vast improvement over the Nimbus and van-based Starwagon it replaced. But it is far from being a revelation in the often-overlooked people-mover class.Still, the Grandis does have significant mechanical and packaging improvements over the faithful Nimbus and brings a new level of safety equipment to the class - six airbags and ABS brakes, for instance.Motivation comes from a 2.4-litre SOHC 16-valve four-cylinder engine emitting 121kW of power and 217Nm of torque – channelled through a four-speed automatic gearbox with Tiptronic-style shifts. From August 2006 the Grandis range was re-jigged with the renaming of the base model to LS, while a sporty VRX version was introduced, with its own grille, bumper and wheel designs headlining a raft of trim and specification upgrades.
