Toyota CelicaCelica RA60 (Mk3)1 Nov 1981 The radically reshaped Mk3 Celica, with its wedgy profile, pop-up headlights and very '80s interior – shared nothing other than its drivetrain and suspension with its portly predecessor. Strongly futuristic in style and designed by a Japanese team allegedly all under 25 years in age, two wedgy body styles were offered – two-door coupe and three-door hatchback. And again, despite the standout styling, the Celica’s poor dynamics were a major disappointment. It also suffered from a big weight increase, sapping even more life from the revised but barely improved 2.0-litre 21R-C engine’s languid performance. A new four-speed auto was introduced. This was a low point in the Celica’s long career here. |
