Celica ZZT231 (Mk7)

1 Nov 1999

The most significant change to the Celica in almost 15 years saw an all-new platform, engine, body and interior.

Smaller and lighter than its Camry-based predecessor, the ZZT231 series was far more sports car orientated, and featured futuristic wedge styling that came from its California design studio.

An all-new 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine produced 140kW of power, thanks to variable-valve timing (dubbed VVTL-i in Toyota speak).

A six-speed manual gearbox was standard, while the four-speed auto option featured a steering wheel-mounted electronic tip-shift function.

Again one body style and two models were offered – SX and ZR. Both featured dual airbags, anti-lock brakes and cruise control, with the latter also boasting side airbags.
