Super TestCar reviews - Honda - Civic - CXi 3-dr hatchHonda modelsOverview18 Jun 2003 HONDA went all out to address the criticisms its previous (EF) generation Civic attracted with the all-new EK model. Performance, refinement, comfort, quietness, safety, durability and especially interior space levels increased markedly, underpinned by one of the nicest and easiest-driving undercarriages in the small car world. About the only quibble concerned the rather frumpy styling, but even that has proved durable in the many years since its release. The CXi was a far more legitimate base model than its predecessor's scorned Breeze, with a lively 88kW 1.6-litre fuel-injected engine providing plenty of performance, while keener drivers appreciated the attributes of the double wishbone suspension and high grip levels. All models also sported a driver's side airbag, power steering and electric mirrors. A small facelift in November 1998 brought new wheel covers, revised trim and a slightly squarer front end design. Deservedly popular, this is the model that reinstated the Civic as a must-have small car experience.
