Super TestCar reviews - Honda - Civic - CXi 3-dr hatchHonda modelsUsed Rivals18 Jun 2003 HOLDEN BARINA 3D HATCHBACK (1994-1998) THE SB Barina GSi is a hot-hatch with OK grip, a lusty Lotus-tuned 78kW 1.6-litre engine offering strong performance and generous equipment levels. But its wooly steering, hard ride and smallish cabin are unlikely to appeal, while the SB model's overall durability is a little suspect too. FORD LASER 3D HATCHBACK (1994-1996) THE KJ Lynx stands out from the crowd with its radical rear end styling and three-spoke alloy wheels, but in the end attracted few buyers. It is well equipped with anti-lock brakes and twin airbags, and offers better than average rear seat space. Good handling and a 90kW 1.8-litre twin cam engine are assets. PEUGEOT 306 3D HATCHBACK (1994-1997) PEUGEOT's 306 won friends with its appealing styling, exceptional ride quality and comfortable seats. The XR equipment level includes electric windows, a driver airbag (from '96) and central locking. Its 77kW 1.8-litre single-cam motor is best suited to the five-speed manual, so avoid the sluggish auto. MITSUBISHI LANCER 2D COUPE (1996-2004) THE CE Lancer does everything it is supposed to do competently without being outstanding in any one area. The GLXi equipment level is similar to the Civic. The 1.8-litre engine provides good fuel economy while producing a competitive 86kW. Small wheels and tyres limit the Lancer's handling ability.
