Super TestCar reviews - Honda - CRX - 2-dr targa coupeHonda modelsOverview18 Jun 2003 ON paper, Honda's decision to import the targa roofed CRX in the aftermath of the epoch-making Mazda MX-5 seemed like a wise move. But the reality was something different, as buyers somehow didn't really connect with the third-generation CRX's odd quad headlight design and almost toy-car proportions. But compared to the impossibly cute previous edition, this CRX offered worthwhile improvements to performance (courtesy of a 118kW 1.6-litre DOHC VTEC engine), a much more supple and manoeuvrable front-drive chassis, a better five-speed manual gearbox and significantly improved comfort and refinement. But the cabin seemed a little cut-price and the handling didn't quite seem as sharp as before. Plus the '92 CRX weighed over 15 per cent more than the classic old one...
