Super TestCar reviews - Hyundai - Sonata - GLE sedanHyundai modelsOverview18 Nov 1993 HYUNDAI'S long-running model name in Australia was launched here in 1989 as a combatant against the Mitsubishi Magna and Toyota Camry. And like its rivals a four-cylinder and V6 engines mounted to a front-wheel drive transaxle were offered. The second-generation Sonata featured here was a palpable improvement over its frumpy predecessor, offering better dynamic and comfort qualities in a better looking package. But Hyundai wasn't quite there yet, with a big lack of driver appeal and refinement hampering its chances of offering a segment leader. Secondhand it makes a bargain five-seat sedan runabout, but quality isn't high and longevity isn't really this model's forte either.
