MORE refined than before and with a powerful but smaller capacity V6 engine, the new Sonata is notable for its unusual exterior styling and keen pricing. Short on standard safety equipment like airbags but strong on air-conditioning and electric windows, Hyundai woos with popular goodies. The Sonata may provide decent space, acceptable road manners and some comfort but more expensive competitors such as the Toyota Camry are still better overall.

The medium-sized Sonata never delivered quite what it promised, based on expectations fired up by the smaller Lantra. Chassis dynamics, and even performance from the 3.0-litre front-drive Mitsubishi V6, were disappointing, as was the quality. A 2.0-litre four-cylinder was also available.
