Road TestCar reviews - Land Rover - Range Rover Sport - 5-dr wagon rangeLand Rover modelsOverviewLand Rover seeks to settle the BMW X5 score with its Range Rover Sport31 Mar 2006 IS the Range Rover Sport a true Range Rover, or is it merely a modified Discovery 3? It’s both actually. Where the original Discovery was based on a Range Rover, the latest Range Rover is based on a Discovery, yet is sold alongside the BMW-developed Range Rover that came to Australia in 2002. All very confusing, but the Range Rover Sport is presented as a mid-way step between the Disco 3 and the full-size Range Rover and, as its name implies, is aimed more at on-road dynamics than any of its ilk so far. In topline supercharged V8 form, the Range Rover Sport retains the traditional off-road abilities, yet creeps close to BMW’s X5 on the road. Not a bad achievement. It is the closest thing yet to a vehicle that can operate with supreme effectiveness in both worlds.
