Super TestCar reviews - Nissan - Pulsar - SSS 5-dr hatchNissan modelsUsed Rivals25 Jun 2003 FORD LASER 3D HATCHBACK (1992-1994) THE TX3 Laser almost matches the Pulsar in on-road capabilities and performance with 92kW from the 1.8-litre, twin cam engine. The Laser also has a competitive equipment list but loses out to the SSS on passenger space and rear seat access. HONDA CIVIC 3D HATCHBACK (1991-1993) THE two-door Civic looks sharp and has a lot of passenger space for its size but not much storage room. With only 1.6-litres, the Si engine loses out in mid-range torque but has a competitive 96kW. The equipment level is similar to the SSS. MAZDA 323 5D HATCHBACK (1989-1994) THE Astina combines appealing and unique styling and four doors, although there is slightly less passenger space than the SSS. Under the skin, the SP shares engines with the TX3 so performance is similar. The SP is also well equipped with quality and attention to detail which matches the Civic. PEUGEOT 205 3D HATCHBACK (1987-1994) THE 205 GTI is one of the best looking hatches around but there is less interior space than the SSS. The 1.9-litre engine is the least powerful of this group at 75kW but the light weight and nimble handling make the GTi fun to drive. The manual steering is great at speed but makes the car heavy to park.
