Super TestCar reviews - Renault - Megane - convertibleRenault modelsTransmission30 Nov 2001 EITHER a five-speed manual or a four-speed "Proactive" automatic transmission are available. Renault says the new generation automatic provides improved driveability and lower fuel consumption and maintenance costs. While most automatic transmissions offer only two gear settings - usually comfort and sport - Proactive offers nine automatically adopted settings, plus one manual setting. The transmission control computer calculates the driving style, road profile and operating conditions, and decides on the most appropriate gear. The transmission has the ability to downshift under braking and will retain the selected gear if the accelerator is released quickly, thus promoting engine braking.
