Super TestCar reviews - Toyota - Echo - 5-dr hatchToyota modelsResearch Toyota Transmission1 Feb 2001 ECHO is available with a five-speed manual or four-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission with overdrive. The auto features a Ravigneaux-type planetary gear that uses a single set of planetary gears compared with three in a conventional automatic. The major benefit is a reduction in shift lag by as much as 50 per cent. The automatic transmission features torque control during shifting (to minimise shift shock), N to D squat control and A/T shift lock (to minimise the possibility of incorrect operation of the automatic transaxle). The manual transmission has tall fourth and fifth ratios to maximise fuel economy at higher speeds.
