Super TestCar reviews - Volkswagen - Beetle - 2.0 Ikon 3-dr hatchVolkswagen modelsOverviewOnly the familiar bug silhouette remained with the 'New Beetle' of 200029 Mar 2001 By BRUCE NEWTON IT'S always good to see a new car that breaks fresh styling ground while successfully re-interpreting old styling themes. The VW Beetle is a bold, likeable design that brings smiles to frazzled drivers in peak-hour traffic. It is a quality car, very much like a Golf to drive (it shares mechanicals) although it's no rocketship. The downsides are a lack of back seat space, the small boot and a rather lofty price. Model release date: 1 January 2000 to 1 November 2009 Did you know?1. With a 1.6-litre air-cooled "boxer" engine mounted behind the rear axle it was anything but conventional. Despite having substantially less power than the new car, it was also less economical and less spacious. |
