Road TestCar reviews - Volkswagen - Touareg - V6 5-dr wagonVolkswagen modelsOverviewWe test Volkswagen's first SUV, the Porsche Cayenne-based Touareg V625 Jun 2004 KEEN pricing and an undisputed Euro feel make the Volkswagen Touareg a tempting choice in the luxury sports utility market. The base model V6 undercuts everything else in the category, including the Honda MDX and Lexus RX330, yet is almost as big as a current model Range Rover. Comprehensive equipment, a proper, three-differential 4WD system complete with a low-range function for off-road use and smooth performance underline the advantages VW is offering and help make the Touareg a competent performer both on and off-road. The exterior dimensions translate to a generous interior that will handle passengers and luggage with ease. Perhaps the only downer is that the Touareg, like the Porsche Cayenne with which it shares its basic design, only offers five seats.
