BMW details, prices second-generation X2

Coupe-like BMW X2 SUV range now includes iX2 BEV, range-wide AWD; here in Q1 2024

12 Oct 2023

DETAILS and pricing of BMW’s second generation X2 small SUV launch line-up have surfaced with the three variant AWD range due here in Q1 next year, now including a fully electric iX2 xDrive30 battery electric model complementing two turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol variants.

Other 2WD X2s will be announced soon as replacements for the current (lower cost) models.

Pricing for the kick off X2 xDrive20i starts at $75,900 plus on-road costs with the higher performance X2 M35i xDrive starting at $92,900 +ORC. Price details for the iX2 xDrive30 will be announced later this month in conjunction with supplementary model details.

The X2 AWD faces stiff competition in the premium small SUV space from the likes Audi’s Q2 and Q3 quattros from $53,300 and $58,400 +ORC respectively, the Jaguar E-Pace from $76,773 +ORC, Lexus UX 250h F Sport AWD from $66,490 +ORC and the Mercedes-Benz GLA 35 4Matic from $96,269 +ORC.

The two petrol-powered X2 AWDs run Steptronic seven-speed fluid automatic transmissions behind a 2.0-litre twin-scroll turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder in different states of tune.

The 2.0i version is good for 150kW and 300Nm to put down a 0-100km/h sprint in 7.4 seconds while using premium unleaded at an as yet undisclosed rate. The X2 M35i is a different kettle of fish and is good for 233kW and 400Nm enabling a 0-100km/h dash in 5.4 seconds while consuming premium at a claimed combined rate of between 7.7 – 8.0 litres per 100km.

Perhaps most interest will surround the iX2 BEV which BMW describes as offering “premium electric mobility in a compact sports activity coupe”.

It runs two integrated electric traction motors, one at the front and one at the rear, that together generate a system output of 230kW (including temporary boost). Combined torque output is a healthy 494Nm that helps the BEV accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in 5.6 seconds on the way to a top speed of 180km/h.

Power comes from a high-voltage (useable) 64.8 kWh battery that links with the “high efficiency” drive system to enable a range of 417 – 449km on WLTP cycle.

Augmenting this is adaptive energy recuperation and a “Max Range” function that contribute to the range figures. The X2 BEV utilises BMW’s latest version of the Max Performance Charging software that optimises efficiency when charging the car.

This new BEV offering will grow the German manufacturer’s local fully electric line-up to 13 variants and counting, a feat BMW Australia says is the widest selection of fully electric vehicles of any manufacturer represented in the country.

The new X2 is significantly larger than before and follows an on trend “coupe” silhouette while under the curvaceous new skin is an extensive array of automated driving and parking systems followed through with what BMW calls “front running” digital services that include BMW iDrive with QuickSelect and BMW’s new Operating System 9.

Dimensions have grown by 194mm in length over its predecessor to 4554mm, by 21mm in width to 1845mm and by 64mm in height to 1590mm. Both wheelbase and track have also grown contributing to additional passenger space in the cabin of the five seat SUV.

Though somewhat derivative of other BMW X models in styling, the new X2 has a model-specific, upright front end with defining elements such as its striking LED headlights and an almost hexagonal kidney grille that integrates what BMW calls “Iconic Glow” contour lighting as standard for Aussie spec cars.

As expected, numerous optional equipment packs are available with the new X2 focusing on wheels, colours, brakes and combinations of the above while some no cost options are available across some variants in terms of upholstery and other interior and exterior details under the Individual program.

Following current BMW interior styling the new X2 features a wide curved dash/information screen behind a “floating” armrest integral control panel, with two cup holders and a mobile phone tray for wireless charging.

New seats adorn the new X2 with a choice of upholstery included perforated Vernasca leather with quilting.

Standard equipment is increased to feature dual-zone automatic climate control, native sat nav, sport leather steering wheel, automatic tailgate operation, four USB-C ports and a 12-volt power socket in both the centre console and the boot all come as standard in the new X2.

The tally of driver assistance systems and digital services available has also increased significantly over the predecessor model.

The body structure is stiffer than before for a weight reduction and targeted upgrades made to the single-joint spring strut axle at the front and the three-link rear axle.

A near-actuator wheel slip limitation is fitted as standard the benefits both traction and directional stability. Other new features include the integrated braking system and the extra, lift-related damping at the front axle.

Comprehensive ADAS systems are standard across the X2 range including a drive recorder, head up display and comfort access with a digital key while OTA software upgrades are also available in the new model through BMWs ConnectedDrive program utilising the new OS 9.

An interesting fact is that both the X2 petrol models and iX2 BEV will be produced on a single (flexible) assembly line at BMW Plant Regensburg in Germany, the facility also producing the the iX2’s high-voltage batteries.
