While the hyper sedan just pips the BMW on price, the wagon version can't quite match its main competitor, with Audi's highly strung RS4 costing $6000 less than the imminent $157,400 AMG C63 S Estate. Exact launch timing is yet to be confirmed for the C63 pair but Mercedes is taking orders from now with the first examples expected about the middle of the year. Power-hungry Australians will not be offered the less potent C63 that is available in Europe, with only the hottest 375kW C63 S coming here along with vicious acceleration to 100km/h in just 4.0 seconds, or 4.1 seconds for the 75kg heavier wagon. Despite a swift 250km/h top speed and acceleration 0.1 seconds faster than the BMW M3, Mercedes claims the AMG C63 S sedan is the most fuel-efficient V8 option in its class, using 8.6 litres per 100 kilometres. Its hand-built 4.0-litre V8 is the same as the engine that powers the evocative Mercedes-AMG GT S sportscar, squeezing out 375kW and 700Nm of torque with a brace of turbochargers located in its valley. A coupe version will follow next year, completing the high performance trio, but two-door AMG fans will have to wait until closer to the launch for pricing and an exact arrival date. Mercedes-Benz Australia/Pacific managing director and CEO Horst von Sanden is promising a more extensive kit list than any previous-generation C63 before it, continuing the tradition of generous standard equipment. “The C63 has always represented an incredible mix of performance, dynamics, luxury, safety and equipment and the new Mercedes-AMG C63 S is going to surprise and excite with the most comprehensive standard equipment inclusions yet,” he said. Standard AMG-branded fare for the new C63 S consists of 19-inch wheels, illuminated sills, instruments, chatty exhaust, front seats, Nappa leather-covered steering wheel and even the dash-mounted analogue clock carries the coveted badge. Like its Ride Control adaptive suspension, the C63's engine mounts can change stiffness providing effective vibration damping when in comfort Dynamic Select setting, but improved handling when in one of the sportier settings. Top quality Burmester sound system, an AMG night package, front seat heating, a head-up display, clever adaptive LED headlights and a panoramic glass roof are all included with the opening price as well.
