Amarok Dark Label is Volkswagen’s new weapon

Stealth mission: The Dark Label takes the regular Highline specification of the Amarok and adds extra kit such as 18-inch black alloys and matte black sports bar on the outside with heated Alcantara trim seats inside.

VOLKSWAGEN Australia has announced a limited-edition version of its Amarok dual-cab ute called the Dark Label, which will go into battle against rivals including Holden’s new Colorado Black Edition.

Limited to 300 units the Dark Label edition adds $5000 to the price of the Amarok TDI 400 and TDI 420 Highline variants on which it based.

With its 132kW/400Nm turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine and six-speed manual the TDI400 Dark Label costs $56,990 before on-road costs, while the TDI 420 Dark Label is $59,990 and has an eight-speed automatic transmission mated to the same engine producing 132kW and 420Nm.

Dark Label exterior upgrades include 18-inch black alloy wheels, bi-Xenon headlights with LED running lights, matte black sports bar and side steps, darkened tail-lights, plus rear bumper and door handles also in black.

The Black Label interior gets tailored floor mats and heated front seats in Alcantara trim with mock carbon-fibre bolsters.

Standard features in the Highline variant include five-inch screen with satellite navigation, SD car reader, 30GB hard drive, Bluetooth connectivity, leather-clad steering wheel and gear knob, plus dual-zone air-conditioning.

Both variants are equipped with Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel drive system, which is permanent in the automatic version and selectable in the manual.

Volkswagen Australia said both Dark Label Amaroks are available for order now with deliveries commencing early in 2015.

This is the second special-edition Amarok released by Volkswagen in five months with the kit-boosted Canyon going on sale in April.

The 4x4 ute segment is dominated by Toyota's Hilux, which consistently sells more than 2000 units per month and incentives from rivals in the form of special editions are common.

Last week Holden announced a Black Edition package for its Colorado crew cab which bundles extra features worth $5000 for $3995.
