Prices up for facelifted VW Tiguan Allspace

Volkswagen’s seven-seat Tiguan Allspace large SUV adopts a more upmarket line-up

14 Mar 2022

THE updated seven-seat Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace, replete with a revised line-up that incorporates Life, Elegance and R-Line grades packing additional standard onboard tech, will go on sale in May from $44,590 plus on-road costs.

Over and above cosmetic changes, which include redesigned bumpers plus all-LED headlights and tail-light clusters, all MY22 Tiguan Allspace variants come equipped with Digital Cockpit Pro (an upgraded electronic instrument cluster), digital radio and a wireless smartphone charging pad complemented by wireless connection to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Depending on variant, prices have also risen by between $3100 and $3800 over the outgoing Allspace.

The range’s powertrain line-up comprises 1.4- and 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engines, as well as a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel, which are paired to dual wet-clutch (DSG) automatic transmissions.

Apart from the entry-level 110TSI Life that has front-wheel drive and a six-speed transmission, all versions feature the Wolfsburg-based manufacturer’s 4Motion all-wheel drivetrain and seven-speed transmission.

Like last year's revisions to the five-seat Tiguan normal wheelbase (NWB), the R-Line package becomes a standalone variant. This repositioning was, Volkswagen says, in response to “the overwhelming preference of Elegance grade customers for the (previously optional) R-Line”.

At 4701mm in length, the Tiguan Allspace is almost 22cm longer than its NWB sibling, with the additional 106mm of rear overhang allowing for the addition of two seats to create a third row and moving the Allspace up to the large SUV segment.

With all seats up, the Allspace’s boot capacity is claimed to be 230 litres. When the third row is stowed this expands to 700 litres and, when the second and third rows are folded, it is 1775 litres.

In addition to its extra storage and seats over the Tiguan NWB, the Allspace Life (previously known as the Comfortline) further features standard wireless phone charging and a torch fitted in the hold.

Compared with their Tiguan NWB equivalents, the Allspace Elegance – replacing the Highline – and Allspace R-Line grades have heated and ventilated front seats plus heated outboard second-row seats.

Volkswagen passenger vehicles brand director Michal Szaniecki said the Tiguan Allspace range had been realigned to reflect customer preference.

“It's vital to have a strong entry variant and, for many people, the 110TSI is all the SUV they would want,” Mr Szaniecki said.

“As ever, though, our customers gravitate toward the top of our ranges and that's why Elegance and R-Line comprise four of the six Allspace versions available.”

The Tiguan Allspace Life is available in either 110TSI (with 110kW/250Nm 1.4-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine, a six-speed DSG and front-wheel drive) or 132TSI (with 132kW/320Nm 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol, seven-speed DSG and 4Motion) guises.

In addition to the new LED lights, digital dash and wireless connectivity features, entry-grade variants come standard with 18-inch Kingston alloys plus space-saver spare, auto lights and wipers, electric folding and heated side mirrors, 8.0-inch Discover Media infotainment system with sat-nav, voice and gesture control plus tri-zone climate control with fore and aft touch controls and an electric tailgate.

Optional metallic paint options include Pyrite Silver, Platinum Grey, Atlantic Blue, Deep Black pearl effect ($900) and King's Red Premium ($1100), while specifying the Luxury Package (including Vienna leather upholstery, electrically adjustable driver's seat with memory function, heated and ventilated front seats and a panoramic glass sunroof) costs $5500.

The mid-spec Tiguan Allspace Elegance is available as a 162TSI – 162kW/350Nm 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol, seven-speed DSG and 4Motion, as well as a 147TDI – 147kW/400Nm 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel, seven-speed DSG and 4Motion.

Allspace Elegance variants can be distinguished from their siblings by 19-inch Auckland alloys with space saver spare, IQ Light Matrix LED headlights, dynamic indicators and tinted rear windows, as well as additional chrome and silver styling elements.

In addition to seat heating and ventilation, the Allspace Elegance is equipped with adaptive chassis control, 9.2-inch Discover Pro infotainment unit and 30-colour ambient interior lighting.

Apart from paint options, buyers can choose a Sound and Vision Package that adds a head-up display, area view cameras and a  Harman Kardon premium audio system for $2600, while a panoramic glass sunroof is $2100.

Finally, the range-topping Tiguan Allspace R-Line is also available in 162TSI and 147TDI guises, but they appear far more purposeful than the other variants by virtue of 20-inch Misano alloys, premium LED tail-lights with dynamic indicators and an R-Line body kit comprising bumpers, side sills, rear spoiler and badges on the grille and side spears.

R-Line Vienna leather trim, a sports multifunction steering wheel (with haptic feedback buttons), progressive steering, stainless steel pedals and a black headliner complete the interior appointment.

The MY22 Tiguan Allspace range’s safety equipment list is comprehensive and headlined by IQ. Drive, which includes Travel Assist semi-autonomous technology with adaptive lane guidance, Front Assist with pedestrian monitoring, lane assist, emergency assist, adaptive cruise control, side assist, rear cross traffic alert, park assist, front and rear parking sensors, driver fatigue detection and 360-degree occupant protection.

All variants are covered by a five-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty and one year of roadside assist.
