COMPETING directly with one-tonners including Toyota’s top-selling HiLux and the model to which it is mechanically identical, Holden’s Colorado, the all-diesel D-Max range comprised 11 model variants at launch including single and dual-cab body styles in both ute and cab/chassis configurations, plus 4x2 and 4x4 drivetrains and three trim levels.

Sharply priced and competitively equipped, the entry-level SX single-cab/chassis 4x2 manual included an anti-lock braking system (ABS), air-conditioning (AC) and a limited-slip differential (LSD).

The D-Max offered a class-leading cab-to-axle length in cab/chassis guise, plus a 3.0-litre common-rail variable-vane turbo-diesel that returned as little as 7.9L/100km in single-cab 4x2 form.

In May 2010, Isuzu refreshed the D-Max range, widening the availability of the automatic transmission and cruise control plus increasing the versatility of the Space Cab variant.

The most obvious change was to the range-topping D-Max LS-U 4x4 and LS 4x2 crew utes, which got a new chrome grille with a central cross-bar and prominent vertical bars. They also received new-design double-spoke alloy wheels.
