Fourth-generation SorentoOct 2017

Fourth-generation Sorento

Kia facelifted its seven-seat Sorento large SUV in October 2017, giving the family hauler its first update since the all-new model arrived in mid 2015.The Korean car-maker made a number of subtle improvements to its largest SUV, while slightly increasing prices and dropping the former range-topping Platinum variant from the line-up.Improvements included the addition of more active safety features, ride and handling tweaks and the replacement of the old six-speed automatic transmission in favour of an in-house-developed eight-speed unit. The old 3.3-litre V6 powering front-drive variants was swapped out in favour of a larger 3.5-litre unit, resulting in a 7kW/18Nm power increase, bringing the total output to 206kW/336Nm.All-wheel-drive variants were powered by the same 147kW/441Nm 2.2-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder from the previous model, with fuel economy improving by 0.6 litres per 100km to 7.2L/100km thanks to the new eight-speed auto.Head- and tail-light, bumper and grille designs were revised slightly, while more soft touch plastics were added to the interior.Standard equipment included a new 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while SLi and GT-Line variants gained a ten-speaker harman/kardon sound system and 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster display.

Hyundai Kona

AFTER several years absent from the small SUV segment it helped create with the original Tucson and later its iX35 replacement, Hyundai returned with all guns blazing in the form of the Kona.Designed in America and built in South Korea, the compact crossover launched in late 2017 with two basic formats – a naturally aspirated 110kW/180Nm 2.0-litre with six-speed torque-converter auto front-drive and a more expensive 130kW/265Nm 1.6-litre turbo with a seven-speed dual-clutch auto AWD. No manual or diesel were made available.Aimed at the Mazda CX-3, Mitsubishi ASX and Honda HR-V set, the Kona was based on the company’s GB light car/supermini platform also underpinning the Kia Rio among others, but shared many hardware features with the PD-series i30 small car.The 2WD versions were fitted with a torsion beam while AWD variants featured a multi-link arrangement. Some degree of local tuning went into the Konda’s chassis, for the sake of compliance and control.
