Mk5 Accord

1 Oct 1993

Stung by criticism that the previous model was too blandly American, the Mk5 Accord’s coupe-like sedan styling resulted in a car that looked smaller but was actually more spacious.

Improved body strength, tweaked suspension and improved engine efficiency also saw gains in handling, ride and refinement.

The base EXi, which gained a driver’s airbag, was powered by a 103kW 2.2L powerplant, while the VTi and luxury VTi-S models boasted 107kW from the same unit, thanks to the better efficiency of variable-valve timing (VTEC).

The latter also powered the prettier Aerodeck – now called “Accord Wagon” – from June ’94. Once again it was American made.

Air-conditioning became standard in 1995.
