The car is a progression from the 405 model with more rounded shapes linking it to the smaller 306 which itself is due to be replaced. A large Peugeot lion motif in the centre of the grille provides clear recognition. Styling changes effected in late 1999 gave the car a more contemporary look with a smoother front and end and a re-profiled rear deck that assists with boot useability.
