NO-ONE, but no one knows more about smooth riding, deft-handling suspensions than Peugeot. The French charms of the 406 model appeal to drivers wanting a touch of individuality and with an update not so long ago, the cushy Peugeot looks and feels better than ever. The SV model's V6 is a fluid, smooth performer but the sluggish four-speed auto is its Achilles heel. The optional five-speed manual transmission is a better - and slightly cheaper - proposition.

Peugeot 405
Released: February 1989
Ended: May 1996
Family Tree: 406The front-drive 405 replaced the rear-drive 505 in 1989, inheriting a reputation for outstanding ride and handling. Spacious, comfortable and well equipped, the 405 needed more than 1.9 litres - although the twin-cam Mi16 was quite rapid and the turbo diesel SRDT impressively economical.
