New Audi A5 to replace A4 range

AUDI has ditched the A4 model for good after a 30-year run, instead relying on the sleeker, swaggier A5 range to fill the gap. But customers wanting drop-top or two-door models will be fresh out of luck…

The amalgamation of A4 sedan and wagon models into the A5 range is one Audi says, “redefines the sedan and makes the Avant more attractive”, combining coupe styling with four-door practicality.

There is another reason, though, which is the use of odd numbers for combustion models (see A5) and even numbers for all-electric models, meaning the A4 as it stands simply had to die… or electrify.

The simplified four-model lineup will consist of the A5 Sedan and Avant, and S5 Sedan and Avant, which are the first models to be based on the Premium Platform Combustion (PPC) chassis layout.

Standard A5 models will be offered with an entry-level 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine producing 110kW or 150kW depending on the trim, or a 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine with mild-hybrid system producing 150kW/400Nm.

Sportier S5 models will use a 3.0-litre V6 that puts out 270kW, with the same mild-hybrid system for extra punch and economy.

The manufacturer’s new MHEV Plus system relies on a large 1.76kWh battery and two electric motors, offering benefits closer to those typically found on a traditional hybrid vehicle.

Audi claims the new hybrid system reduces emissions by a sizable 10g/km on its diesel engine and 17g/km on the V6 engine used in S5 models. Apparently, it will also provide a 18kW boost and can be used at take-off and up to a speed of around 30km/h.

All the technology equates to impressive claimed combined fuel use figures. The diesel A5 models will sip just 4.7-5.6L/100km, while the petrol S5 models will use 7.4-7.9L/100km.

According to Audi, the new A5 is physically longer and wider too, positioning it against other mid-size sedans like the BMW 4 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Exact dimensions, though, are yet to be disclosed by the manufacturer.

The design cues reflect the increased dimensions, with a muscular stance and sweeping, coupe-like rear-end for the sedan. The Avant opts for a roof spoiler and flat rear window, with steeply raked D-pillars creating a shooting-brake side profile.

“In tandem with the expansion of our all-electric portfolio, we are launching a new generation of models with efficient combustion engines,” said Audi CEO Gernot Döllner.

“The Audi A5 family with its athletic design, completely new interior and future-proof electronics architecture will be the first.

“The advanced MHEV plus technology enables partially electric driving and therefore even more efficient driving.”

Audi has confirmed the new A5 and S5 will launch in Germany and other European markets in November, but Australian launch details are yet to be confirmed.
