New engine headlines modest changes to 350Z

Power bulge: The Z gains a slight hump in the bonnet.

Nissan has improved the silky V6 in its Z sportscar

18 Jan 2007

NISSAN Japan has launched a revised 350Z, with more power via a next-generation V6 engine and a host of exterior and interior upgrades.

The 350Z, known as the Fairlady Z coupe and Fairlady Z Roadster in Japan, gains a new VQ35HR engine with almost 80 per cent of the engine's major parts redesigned, providing improved acceleration and more power.

The VQ35HR engine delivers maximum power of 230kW at 6800 rpm and maximum torque of 358Nm at 4800rpm and top engine speed of 7500 rpm.

The current V6 delivers 221kW at 6400rpm and 352Nm at 4800rpm in the six-speed manual and 206kW at 6200rpm and 363Nm at 4800rpm in the five-speed automatic.

However, the improvements to the new V6 mean that both the manual and auto are likely to have the same outputs when the 350Z hits Australia around May-June.

Visually Nissan has not tampered too much with the 350Z's handsome exterior.

The aluminum bonnet gains a "power bulge" that closely resembles the first-generation S30 Z, larger headrests, improved clear lens LED tail-lights and the adoption of Potenza RE050A tyres to help reduce road noise, a sore point with the current car.

In Japan, three new colours are available, including Premium Passionate Orange, a revival of the Gran Prix Orange body color of the original model.

Nissan's performance NISMO division has also delivered performance upgrades for the 350Z.

High-grip Bridgestone Potenza RE-01R tires have been adopted to absorb high input forces from the road surface.

As well, the car's suspension has been retuned to further enhance cornering performance and performance dampers have been added.

The NISMO's strong exterior design was developed by the Design Group and the Vehicle Performance Testing Group.

A supercomputer was used to run design simulations based on aerodynamic data collected with Super GT race cars.

The distinctive body additions result in superior handling and stability via discreet aerodynamic aids.

The NISMO interior also gains exclusive metallic-looking perforated Alcantara leather trim.

Standard equipment in the 350Z includes traction control, brake assist, cruise control, seven-speaker Bose stereo, aluminum pedals and six-speed manual transmission.
