Bigger, safer and more dynamic than its unloved 121 Metro predecessor, the smallest Mazda was also less expensive at base level too.
Thus the “Mazda2” makes a far more convincing light-car contender, offering improvements in tactile quality, a high-tech 82kW/141Nm 1.5 engine, and – thanks to its coupling up underneath with the Ford Fiesta – much better steering, handling and ride attributes.
It’s also bigger in all directions, particularly inside.
Three models are available - Neo, Maxx and Genki. A minor trim and tail-light facelift arrived in January 2004.
All models have power steering, dual front airbags, a CD player, electric mirrors and – from mid-2003 – power windows.
