BMW Group Australia has slashed up to $4500 off the price of its 2 Series Coupe range, while increasing the price of drop-top versions of its rear-drive sportscar by up to $1000.

The German car-maker has introduced a number of new connectivity and safety features to the two-door range that arrived in February last year in Coupe guise, while the Convertible launched here in March this year.

BMW Group Australia head of product and market planning Shawn Ticehurst said the spec additions and the price changes will help the 2 Series appeal to a wider audience.

“The pricing and specification updates to the BMW 2 Series Coupe range are an exciting measure designed to build on the momentum generated by the model since its launch last year,” he said.

“The increased value proposition delivered by these measures will ensure even more people can enjoy the rewarding and characteristically BMW driving experience this car has to offer.”

Pricing for the Coupe now kicks off at $48,900 plus on-road costs for the 220i and $50,900 for the diesel-powered 220d, which represents a $2100 drop apiece.

The 228i Coupe drops by $4500 to $59,900, while the spicy M235i is $2430 cheaper at $77,500.

Convertible pricing is up by $1000 in 220i guise to $55,900 and $700 to $86,500 for the M235i, but the 228i drop-top maintains its $68,900 price tag.

BMW appears to have addressed criticism over its decision to offer a reversing camera as standard fare on the Convertible from launch, but only as an option on the Coupe, as the hard-top version now carries it as standard across the range.

Further additional kit in the Coupe includes more options for the ConnectedDrive suite such as Real Time Traffic Information, Remote Services, and Services, while the 228i and M235i gain DAB+ digital radio.

As the Convertible already included a reversing camera as standard, it adds the aforementioned ConnectedDrive upgrades on all variants, and digital radio on the top-tier 228i and M235i.

So far this year, BMW has sold 1238 examples of the 2 Series Coupe/Convertible, with the company confirming that about 500 of those sales have been for the drop-top.

In overall sales, the 2 Series is the third best-selling model in the sub-$80,000 sportscar segment behind the Hyundai Veloster on 2238 and the Toyota 86 on 2087.

While it is still yet to be officially announced, it is believed that a super-hot M2 version of the 2 Series will be revealed in the coming months, either ahead of a Los Angeles, or Detroit motor show debut.

Early reports have suggested that the M-badged model will pump out in excess of 270kW and have a 0-100km/h sprint time of less than 4.5 seconds.
