BMW Australia has listened to feedback from customers and the media and dropped the price of its M4 CS track-honed performance coupe by $21,710, with a new starting price of $189,900 plus on-road costs.

Originally priced at $211,610 when the variant was confirmed for Australia back in July, BMW used the German pricing structure for the CS, but was forced to reconsider the following customer feedback, according to BMW Australia product communications manager Adam Davis.

“Based on customer feedback, we had a couple of deposits initially, then at the launch we had feedback from the media … and we really wanted to ensure that there was a proper value proposition there,” he told GoAuto.

“So, the net result is we decided to alter that pricing structure and tighten it up, particularly with M4 Pure being so competitively priced as well, I think it helps with the range.

“And basically anyone who has set a pre-order down will get the car delivered at the new price as well.”

As well as revising M4 CS pricing, BMW has deleted the standard M4 variant from the range, bringing total M4 choice to three grades – M4 Pure, M4 Competition and M4 CS – with the mid-spec model available in both coupe and convertible body styles.

Mr Davis explained that the reason for the range streamlining was the relatively low take-up of the standard M4, with between 80 and 90 per cent of M4 customers opting for the pricier and more potent Competition.

With the deletion of the M4, outputs now start at 331kW/550Nm for the Pure and Competition, while BMW boffins managed to eke out another 7kW/50Nm from the twin-turbo 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder engine for the CS.

All variants drive the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Mr Davis added that he expected the same consolidation to happen to the M3 range when the M3 CS arrives midway through 2018.

With one month left in 2017 BMW has sold 1001 examples of the 4 Series range, representing a 32.3 per cent slide over the previous year.

It currently sits second in the $80,000-plus sportscar segment, behind the Mercedes-Benz C-Class coupe and convertible range with 2150 sales.
