BMW adds equipment to X1, X2 for no extra cost

Wireless Apple CarPlay support now standard across BMW’s X1, X2 ranges

8 Nov 2018

BMW Group Australia has announced range-wide specification upgrades for its X1 and X2 small SUVs, while pricing for the respective ranges has either dropped or held steady.

The X1 continues to kick off from $45,900 before on-road costs for the sDrive18i, while the sDrive18d still costs $4000 more. However, the sDrive20i is now $3700 cheaper, at $50,900, while the xDrive25i’s price has dropped by $600, to $60,900.

The X2’s entry-level cost has been cut by $3000, to $46,900 for the sDrive18i, while the sDrive20i and xDrive20d remain priced at $55,900 and $59,900 respectively. Both models are expected to enter showrooms from January.

Previously standard on the xDrive25i only, a windshield-projected head-up display and Navigation System Plus are now fitted across the X1 and X2 line-ups for no extra cost.

The latter consists of an 8.8-inch touchscreen powered by BMW’s iDrive6 infotainment system. It also features satellite navigation and ‘natural’ voice control.

Prior to this upgrade, these two features formed the $2600 Innovations Package alongside adaptive cruise control, which remains available as an option.

The X1 and X2’s technology levels have also increased with the inclusion of wireless Apple CarPlay support, which was formerly a $479 option for all variants.

Despite its significant price cut and aforementioned additions, the X2 sDrive18i also picks up Orbit Grey 19-inch alloy wheels with a Y-spoke design, which were previously a $900 option over its then 18-inch rims.

According to BMW Group Australia chief executive officer Vikram Pawah, the move to upgrade the X1 and X2 was made to meet buyer demand.

“BMW recognises these segments as key in the Australian market,” he said. “It is also an area that is constantly evolving in terms of technology, specification and customer preference.

“BMW prides itself on being at the forefront of such topics. With the additional specification now found across the X1 and X2 ranges, as well as sharper pricing on key models, we continue to provide compelling offers in this space.”

In the year-to-date sales race, BMW and Audi hold the equal largest share in the premium small-SUV segment, at 26.4 per cent.

The X1 (2634 units, -19.2%) and X2 (988) are the second and sixth best-selling models in the class respectively, with the latter having entered showrooms in March this year.
