New BT-50 to cost more as Mazda increases safety and comfort levels

19 Oct 2011

MAZDA Australia has increased the prices of its BT-50 workhorse ute range by between $470 and $5255.

Its more luxurious new GT models also push the nameplate past the $50,000 mark for the first time.

The company announced the pricing strategy of the majority of its range two days after its national launch following last-minute negotiations with the factory headquarters in Hiroshima that took longer than expected.

Mazda has announced the pricing for its Dual Cab models, which go on sale November 1, and the Freestyle model, which has a slightly smaller cab and rear-hinged rear doors and arrives a month later.

However, it is holding off on revealing the prices of the Single Cab models that will arrive early next year.

Mazda said the price increases are more than justified given the increased quality of the all-new vehicle, the increased payload and towing capacity, improved performance and additional standard equipment.

Importantly, all of the new BT-50 models come standard with electronic stability control and driver and passenger front and curtain airbags, while the Freestyle and Dual Cab models gain additional side airbags.

“The days of omitting safety features to get down to a price point – at least in Mazda’s case – are gone,” said Mazda Australia national sales manager Alistair Doak. The range has been re-jigged, with some models cut and some added, with the notable inclusion of the range-topping GT models that are loaded with luxury items including leather seats.

Freestyle pricing starts at $32,590 for the manual Cab Chassis 4x2 XT model, which represents a $470 increase over the comparable existing model.

The 4x4 version is now $40,660, while the better-specified XTR utility variant costs $46,810.

The entry point for the Dual Cab models is the XT 4x2 manual utility at $36,090, with the XTR version costing $40,740 as a manual.

Automatic transmission adds $2000 across the range.

The most affordable 4x4 Dual Cab is the XT cab-chassis manual at $42,660, a 4x4 Dual Cab with a utility back is $44,160 and stepping up to the 4x4 XTR Dual Cab utility costs $48,810.

Rounding out the range are the GT models, including the 4x4 Dual Cab utility manual for $50,710.

Mazda Australia will also offer two equipment kits including wheels, bull bars, sports bars and tonneau covers for the BT-50, and pricing should be confirmed next week.
