JS SebringJun 2007

JS Sebring

THE first mid-sized Chrysler sedan in Australia since the chart-busting first-generation Sigma of 1977 to 1980 hit the streets from June 2007, packed with value.Called the Sebring, it is an American-made, three-box, four-door, five-seater sedan designed to tackle the mid-to-top spec versions of the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord and Subaru Liberty, among others. To that end, even the base Sebring Touring includes automatic transmission, ESP stability control, anti-lock brakes with brake assist and traction control, six airbags, leather upholstery, heated front seats, 17-inch alloy wheels, climate control air-conditioning and tyre-pressure monitors. The second-tier Sebring Limited model adds niceties such as a sunroof, six-stack Boston acoustic audio/DVD player, headlight washers and 18-inch alloys, for $3500 extra. From about August, the Sebring’s fraternal Dodge twin, the Avenger sedan, should slot in from under $30,000, to battle the base-model Camry and co.This strategy of putting the Dodge as the price leader while placing the Chrysler as the premium product is how Chrysler Group Australia will position what are essentially the same vehicles in different ends of the same (D) segment.Driving the front wheels initially is the 2360cc 2.4-litre twin-cam four-cylinder ‘World Engine’ familiar to owners of the Dodge Caliber R/T, Jeep Compass, Mitsubishi Outlander, and Hyundai Sonata, as well as the upcoming Mitsubishi Lancer and Jeep Patriot.Enhanced with variable valve timing, the Sebring’s engine outputs are 125kW of power at 6000rpm and 220Nm of torque at 4500rpm.The only gearbox available for now is a four-speed automatic with a Tiptronic-style sequential shift action Chrysler calls ‘AutoStick.’ No manual version is expected. In January 2008, Chrysler swelled the ranks of four-seater convertibles with the Sebring Cabrio. As the American company’s answer to the Volkswagen Eos, Holden Astra TwinTop, Renault Megane CC, Peugeot 307 CC and Ford Focus coupe convertible, as well as the Saab 9-3 Convertible, the Sebring Cabrio offers the choice of a fabric or a folding metal roof, depending on price.Like the Eos, the front-wheel drive Sebring is a mix of small and medium-class car, offering palpably more interior space than most of the other chop-tops.With the ability to carry two golf bags when the roof is retracted, cargo capacity is rated at 356 litres roof-up and 193 litres with it folded into the boot.Chrysler uprated the Sebring body considerably, incorporating ultra high-strength steel in the cross-car beam for greater impact resistance.Powering both Cabrios is Chrysler’s first V6/six-speed automatic gearbox combination for Australia. Also made available at the same time in the Sebring sedan as an option, it is a 2.7-litre double overhead-cam 24-valve petrol unit delivering 137kW of power at 5500rpm and 256Nm of torque at 4000rpm.Saddled with a hefty 1745kg (hardtop: 1785kg) of beefed-up body and chassis, the V6 sprints to 100km/h in 10.3 seconds, on its way to a 206km/h top speed.Standard features include ESP stability control, four-wheel disc brakes, anti-lock brakes with Hydraulic Brake Assist and traction control, dual front airbags, front-seat mounted curtain airbags, a tyre pressure monitor, a powered driver’s seat, cruise control, an alarm, climate control air-conditioning, an odour and stain-resistant cloth trim Chrysler calls YES Essentials and 17-inch alloy wheels.

C4 PicassoMay 2007

C4 Picasso

CITROEN re-entered the people mover market in Australia with the C4 Picasso, 32 years after the demise of its iconic, multi-seat DS Safari station wagon. Known as the C4 Grand Picasso abroad, the French-built Citroen competes with the Honda Odyssey and Mitsubishi Grandis, as well as its Renault Grand Scenic compatriot.Like these, the Picasso has four doors and a three-row, seven-seater cabin layout, with the last pair of chairs folding flat into the floor. However the Citroen was first in class with a diesel engine – a 2.0-litre HDI common-rail twin-cam 16-valve four-cylinder turbo-diesel producing 100kW of power at 4000rpm and 270Nm of torque at 2000rpm – transversely mounted and driving the front wheels. The sole transmission on offer is an Aisin-supplied AM6 six-speed automatic gearbox with a steering-wheel paddle-shift function. This combination – unavailable in Europe in the seven-seater Picasso, and devised specifically for Australia, New Zealand and Japan – helps the HDi deliver a combined average fuel-consumption figure of 6.1 litres per 100km and a carbon-dioxide reading of 159 grams per kilometre.Top speed is 195km/h, the 100km/h mark is hit in 12.5 seconds, and the standstill to 400m-sprint time takes 18.5 seconds. In contrast, the EW10A 2.0-litre twin-cam 16-valve four-cylinder petrol engine model delivers 103kW at 6000rpm, 200Nm at 4000rpm, 8.9L/100km, 211g/km of carbon dioxide waste, 190km/h, a 12.2 second 0-100km/h-sprint run, and an identical 0-400m-dash result. Plus, the 2.0-litre petrol Picasso must suffice with Citroen’s AL4 four-speed automatic gearbox. No manual or semi-automatic transmissions are available for now.

AH Astra Series II (MY7.5)Apr 2007

AH Astra Series II (MY7.5)

HOLDEN comprehensively addressed the mainstream AH Astra CD and CDX hatch and wagon models’ biggest weak point – their lack of oomph from the 90kW/165Nm 1.8-litre ECOTEC four-cylinder engine – with a heavily revised 1.8-litre unit.Known as the 1.8 XER, it delivers 103kW of power at 6300rpm and 175Nm of torque (that’s for the manual auto: 170Nm) at 3800rpm. Both engines are married to a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic gearbox.Minor cosmetic changes accompanied the reengineering, including a new grille, front bumper, lower air intake and headlight surrounds, as well as an upgrade in the trim materials used.Meanwhile, a new non-turbo SRI hatchback model was introduced, using a 110kW/210Nm 2.2-litre direct-injection petrol four-cylinder engine. Gearbox choices are a four-speed auto or six-speed manual. This engine also powered the AH Astra TwinTop, Holden’s four-seater retractable hardtop convertible answer to the Peugeot 307 CC, Renault Megane CC and Ford Focus Convertible. It replaced the popular TS Astra Convertible. All other AH Series II cars – including the 1.9-litre CDTi turbo-diesel, and 2.0-litre turbo-charged petrol models – remained the same mechanically.Sadly, the impressive AH Astra wagon still misses out on the diesel and 2.0 and 2.2 petrol powerplants, having to make do with the upgraded 1.8.

EosMar 2007

Eos

THE curiously named Eos coupe-convertible is Volkswagen’s long-overdue replacement for the last in a succession of Golf Cabriolets, which was discontinued here in March 2003.As VW correctly points out, however, the Eos is more than a new-generation Golf convertible. First, it’s the German giant’s first folding metal-roofed convertible and, second, it’s based on a new platform that mates the MacPherson strut front-end from the current Golf V with the multi-link rear-end of the new Passat. To be sold alongside the retro-inspired Beetle Cabrio, the Eos represents real value among its European coupe-convertible rivals, such as Holden’s Astra TwinTop, Peugeot’s 307 CC, the Renault Megane CC and Ford’s upcoming Focus CC.Priced keenly from $47,990 for the TDI turbo-diesel and $49,990 for the TFSI turbo-petrol (VW’s famed six-speed Direct Shift Gearbox costs an extra $2300 for both variants), the Eos diesel is almost $20,000 lower than Australia’s only other turbo-diesel cabriolet – Saab’s new 9-3 1.9 TiD Linear Convertible, which offers a soft-top roof.Borrowed from Golf, the Eos TDI’s 2.0-litre oil-burning engine delivers 7kW less power than the Saab with 103kW at 4000rpm, and the same torque - 320Nm from 1750rpm.The Eos TDI also comes well equipped as standard, offering extras over the 9-3 like 17-inch alloy wheels, rear parking sensors, a six-CD stacker, an auto-dimming interior mirror and tyre pressure monitor.Other standard Eos features include twin front and twin front side/head airbags, stability/traction control, ABS, dual-zone climate-control, an eight-speaker sound system, rain-sensing wipers, automatic headlights, cruise control, trip computer, a multi-function leather steering wheel, power windows/mirrors, LED tail-lights, black cloth trim and foglights. The 147kW/280Nm Eos TFSI manual offers more power and torque than its three key rivals – all of which come with optional four-speed autos.
