Renault’s small car contender, the Megane, received some minor tweaks in 2013, including the introduction of a cheaper entry-level ‘Expression’ variant to kick off the range.The Megane included some very subtle styling tweaks, including a new front bumper, a honeycomb grille and boomerang-shaped LED daytime running lights, while Renault also tweaked the chassis setup, and stiffened the springs and front and rear dampers on the new GT-Line variants in an attempt to give the car more dynamic nous. Renault also took the opportunity to introduce a stylish new wagon bodystyle to the range and, with the limited edition GT220 powered by a de-tuned version of the 2.0-litre turbocharged unit from the Megane RS 265 the headline act.The Megane hatch and wagon also shifted production from Turkey to Spain, except the CC (Coupe-Cabriolet) that was sourced from France.

Renault Clio

Renault returned to the light car segment in Australia in 2013 with its all-new Clio hatch range. Although the previous model was sold locally, only the hi-po three-door RS variant was available.Not this time around. The French car-maker re-launched the five-door city hatch range with two engine choices and three specifications and aimed it squarely at the youth market.The sexy little Clio was the first vehicle penned by new Renault design chief Laurens van den Acker and the stylish hatch previewing the French brand’s new corporate face.High levels of customization a-la Mini and Citroen enhanced the appeal to youth buyers.Two turbo powertrains were available at launch, including a 900cc three-cylinder unit producing 66kW/135Nm, matched with a five-speed manual gearbox for fuel consumption of 4.5 litres per 100 kilometres.An 88kW/190Nm 1.2-litre four-cylinder engine mated exclusively to an auto managed fuel figures of 5.2L/100km.Standard equipment across the competitively priced range included height- and reach-adjustable steering wheel, 60/40 split-fold rear seats, electric front windows (not at the rear on base versions), electric mirrors, cruise control with speed limiter, a two-speaker MP3/USB/Aux-in sound system with Bluetooth streaming, 15-inch steel wheels and a rear spoiler.Of course, more gear was added the further up the range you went.The Clio featured standard safety gear including front and side airbags, but no rear-side airbags, a maximum five-star Euro NCAP rating and the rear bench had two ISOFIX points.

MY13 Trax

Holden got the jump on most of its competitors by launching the Barina-based Trax crossover in mid 2013, ahead of the similarly positioned Ford EcoSport, Renault Captur and Nissan Juke.The high-riding city-friendly crossover was aimed at youth buyers and despite attracting a price premium over its mechanically similar Barina sibling, featured an extensive standard features list, including Holden’s MyLink infotainment system.The Trax was powered by the same 1.8-litre four cylinder unit from its Cruze stablemate. It produced 103kW/175Nm and gave the Trax official fuel consumption figures of 7.0L/100km when matched with a five-speed manual and 7.6L/100km with the six-speed auto.It was available in base LS and range-topping LTX guise and was awarded a five-star ANCAP safety rating.
