Super TestCar reviews - Mazda - 323 - Astina 5-dr hatchMazda modelsUsed Rivals18 Jun 2003 TOYOTA COROLLA 5D LIFTBACK (1991-1993) THE Seca, like the Astina, was an upmarket version of the Corolla at the time. Powered by a smooth twin cam, 16-valve, 1.6-litre engine, it performs and handles well. Transmission options are five-speed manual or four-speed auto, driving the front wheels. Power steering and radio/cassette are standard. NISSAN N14 PULSAR 5D HATCHBACK (1991-1995) BOASTING the largest engine in the class with a 1998cc, DOHC 16- valve unit, performance is a strong point. A 1.6-litre version is also available. The usual four-speed auto/five-speed manual options coupled to front-wheel drive. A nice five-door package with standard features including central locking, power steering and mirrors and radio/cassette. RENAULT 19 5D HATCHBACK (1991-199) A FRENCH interloper with a good ride and comfy seating, powered by a torquey 1.7 engine. Parts and servicing can be costly. Front-wheel drive with four- speed auto or five-speed manual. Central locking, power steering and power windows are included. The 1993 facelift added some spark to the bland styling. MITSUBISHI CC LANCER 5D HATCHBACK (1992-1996) FOLLOWS the usual formula of 1.6-litre, 16-valve engine with front wheel drive and four-speed auto or five-speed manual optional. Strong and reliable but old (the design is actually the 1988 CB model) and a little basic. It's a little out of its depth here.
