Super TestCar reviews - Peugeot - 206 - XT 5-dr hatchPeugeot modelsSafety6 Feb 2001 By P TIBBLES THE absence of a three-point seatbelt and head restraint for the centre rear passenger sours the generally positive safety credentials of the 206. Twin front airbags are standard on XT. At 90 litres capacity, they are designed to protect both the head and thorax. Side airbags are optional on XT. The side bag has a stitched vent that doesn't open until the most effective point of head/bag contact is reached. ABS brakes are optional on XT, standard on GTi and unavailable on XR models. Pyrotechnic front seatbelt pretensioners tighten during an impact to hold occupants more firmly in seats. The fuel tank is located ahead of rear axle. Peugeot says the 206 meets or exceeds international standards of front and side impact protection. All materials used in the cabin are "shock-designed" to prevent them tearing or splintering and creating sharp edges in an impact. Seventy-seven per cent of the 206 body is made of galvanised steel.
