The Mk3 Golf Cabriolet Series II sported a cleverly grafted Golf Mk4-like nose, tail treatment and cabin trim – including its new instrumentation incorporated into the existing dashboard.
This time VW split the models into two.
The new base CL was powered by a 66kW/145Nm 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine, dual airbags, central locking, power steering and an electric soft top, while the new GL retained the same 2.0-litre engine and specifications as before, but added a CD player and more chrome trimmings.
The CL lasted until mid-2000 and never proved popular.
The GL soldiered on until March 2003.
