The Golf range expanded in mid-1995 with the return of the iconic convertible.
Known as the Cabriolet GL, the second Golf chop-top was again engineered and built by Karmann in Germany.
A vast improvement in safety, refinement and driveability, it featured the 85kW/166Nm 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, a four-speed auto or five-speed manual gearbox, anti-lock brakes, air-conditioning, dual airbags, power steering, power windows, central locking, a heated rear glass window and alloy wheels – as well as a nifty powered roof and a surprisingly practical boot.
Leather trim, a CD player and a specification readjustment marked the SE Cabriolet from November ’97 to November ’98.
