Late-2016 saw the release of the second-generation Tiguan, bringing with it class-leading driver-assist tech like autonomous emergency braking, lane assist, active bonnet, multi-collision braking, and park assist as standard fare.

Larger in every dimension to the dinky old version, the Tiguan II was 30mm wider and sat on a wheelbase that was 76mm longer, greatly improving occupant and cargo space alike. But, despite the dimensional uplift, weight dropped by 54kg, thanks to more higher-tensile steel.

The platform was a variation of the MQB modular transverse architecture underpinning the Mk7 Golf, meaning MacPherson strut-type front suspension and a four-link rear end.

The twin-cam 16-valve four-cylinder-only Euro6-certified engine choices with stop/start arrived as either comprehensively modified or all-new, starting with the 110TSI’s 110kW/250Nm 1.4-litre direct-injection petrol FWD variant with cylinder-deactivation technology to save fuel others included the 132TSI’s 132kW/320Nm 2.0-litre with AWD, and 162kW/350Nm 162TSI AWD.

Two 2.0-litre TDI AWD turbo-diesels also made the cut, in 110kW/340Nm 110TDI and 140kW/400Nm 140TDI guises.
