BC Rio Series II

A new nose and tail, improved cabin trim and more standard features marked the BC Rio’s first and only facelift.An immobiliser and power mirrors were now included, along with better headlights and a more updated appearance.But the same old Mazda 121 lurked underneath.Tellingly Kia Motors’ Australian distributors Ateco were very selective as to which media would road-test the Rio, placing wide-reaching doubts of its ability to stand to more contemporary light cars such as the Hyundai Accent and Holden XC Barina – let alone the class-leading Mazda2, Honda Jazz and Ford Fiesta.Luckily for value-minded buyers the BC Rio’s replacement shared only the name.

TB Getz

This was the first baby Hyundai buyers might choose on merit as well as price.Compared to its slightly larger Accent stablemate, the Getz is more space efficient, refined, comfortable and pleasant to sit inside, with real advances in ride quality, engine refinement and dynamic ability.Initially a slightly tweaked version of the Accent’s 74kW/133Nm 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine married to a four-speed auto or five-speed manual gearbox was introduced in base GL three and five-door hatchback and sporty FX three-door guises.But in March ’03 the cheaper Getz XL arrived, powered by a 60kW/117Nm 1.3-litre engine.There was a round of equipment upgrades from October of that year, while the slow-selling FX vanished.Sure, the Getz might have a small boot and struggle in 1.3 auto form, but it shows levels of maturity in light car design an Excel driver would never recognise.

M100 Sirion Series II

With a facelift of dubious aesthetic merit, the Series II neverthelesslooked fresh with its new nose and taillights, and also included minor trim and dashboard changes.Better storage facilities were the upshot, although there were no changes to either the 40kW 1.0 or 75kW 1.3 GTvi models mechanically.But sales started to slide despite keen pricing as competition from Toyota's Echo, the new Hyundai Getz and the Holden Barina hotted up.
