It does not use expensive hybrid technology, with batteries that can cut into boot space, instead utilising a lean diesel engine and a range of other economy features that don’t really affect the drive experience. The engine stops when the car does, a smart alternator reduces the load on the engine and special suspension and tyres do their best to limit drag. These measures mean a very low fuel economy average of just 3.8 litres per 100km, which is the same as a Toyota Prius. Not bad for a $28,990 hatchback that seats five people.
