Four-stroke Engine

Almost all car engines use the four-stroke ‘Otto’ combustion cycle.

This means the pistons go down-up-down-up for each combustion – the first down stroke draws in the fuel/air mixture, the first up stroke compresses it, the ignition causes the second down stroke and the second up stroke pushes out the burned gases.
