Toyota’s decision to add a more potent 87kW/198Nm 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine (22R) from late ’84 only served to highlight the Celica’s inadequate steering, handling and ride attributes – despite the minor suspension revisions that accompanied the heady surge in power.
Revised gear ratios were about the only other change.
This was to be the final rear-wheel drive Celica.
Toyota imported 16,265 RA60/65 and SA63 Celicas here from 1981 to 1985.
