The second and final generation of Paseo sold here featured a torquier but less powerful 1.5-litre engine. Power dropped to 69kW but torque rose to 136Nm.
Nevertheless, Toyota claimed that safety, driveability, economy and emissions output improved markedly.
A driver airbag and anti-lock brakes safety pack was offered as an option, while a sunroof and CD player made up a luxury option.
