Dual front and side airbags plus "sideguard" head airbags that extend along the front and rear side windows are fitted standard. Deployment of these and activation of restraint systems such as front seatbelt pretensioners has also improved with upfront crash sensors, placed next to the radiator, providing a quicker response in the event of a collision. Rear thorax/pelvis side airbags are available as an option. All five occupants are provided with a three-point seatbelt and a height-adjustable head restraint. The A4 was given a four-star overall rating in the European NCAP crash test.
