Instead of basing the wagon on the long-wheelbase Statesman platform, which allowed for a massive cargo area, Holden decided to build the Sportwagon off the shorter Commodore base to create a vehicle with athletic proportions and a sloping back that looks more like a coupe than a traditional wagon. You can get the Sportwagon in all the same flavours as the sedan and there is even a manual SS model for rev-head families. Holden is pitching the Sportwagon as a stylish and sensible alternative to an SUV. It just might be onto something. It was available in three guises – Executive, Acclaim and Berlina. The SS wagon, which had been introduced for the VY model, was dropped. The base engine was an Alloytec 24-valve engine with 175kW and 320Nm, which replaced the old 3.8-litre Ecotech V6. A 250kW 5.7-litre V8 was also made available for the Berlina wagon, which was later upgraded to a 260kW 6.0-litre unit in line with the sedan. A dual-fuel LPG system was also made an option in 2006. |
