It uses a recirculating ball system (usually less precise than rack and pinion although better isolated from road shock), with the degree of assistance determined by engine rpm rather than road speed. The result is a slightly remote feel to the steering, although it is weighted well enough to give some feeling of security while cruising in a straight line.
