First look: Hot Golf a big hit

ALONGSIDE the production versions of Golf V that debuted at the Frankfurt motor show, Volkswagen also chose to reveal what it called a concept version of a back to basics GTi.

In reality, the "concept" is expected to be very similar to the production car tipped to make its debut at the Paris motor show in October, 2004.

GTi was the original hot hatch when the first generation was launched in 1976, with a single three-door body, single engine choice and unique styling cues.

After turning into a lardy parody through the next few iterations, GTi has returned to its roots with a three-door body, 2.0-litre 150kw four-cylinder engine and six-speed double-clutch DSG gearbox.

Unique styling touches include a black grille with red outline ‘GTI’ logos black sills and bumper skirts and a prominent roof spoiler.

In addition, the GTI prototype features twin exhaust pipes 18-inch alloy wheels and red brake callipers.

Inside there's extensive use of aluminium in the pedals, trim, floor and steering wheel, along with sports seats and chrome-ringed instruments.

Underpinning the whole package is Golf V’s more sophisticated platform, with multi-link rear suspension.
