Volkswagen reveals T6.1 platform

VOLKSWAGEN has refreshed its sixth-generation Multivan while revealing details for its new T6.1 platform that will extend to the Transporter large van and Caravelle people-mover, with the updated models expected to arrive in Australia early next year.

The T6.1 platform adds new powertrain options, a number of standard safety and connectivity features, and as a modernised design front-to-rear to put the vans more in line with Volkswagen’s passenger-car line-up.

Hydraulic power steering makes way for an electro-mechanical system that supports more advanced driver-assist systems like Cross Wind Assist, which stabilises the steering during strong winds.

The T6.1 platform also debuts autonomous emergency braking (AEB), trailer assist, lane-keep assist, park assist and rear cross-traffic alert.

Inside, a new dashboard design hosts a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and 8.0- or 9.2-inch touchscreens powered by Volkswagen’s MIB3 infotainment system that supports internet radio, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

In Europe, new 66kW and 81kW 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engines will be available, while carry-over units include the 110kW 2.0-litre single-turbo and 146kW twin-turbo oil-burners.

A pure-electric T6.1, featuring an 82kW electric motor with either a 28.8kWh or 77.6kWh battery, will be also be offered with a claimed driving range of more than 400 kilometres.

It has yet to be confirmed if the new engines will be offered in Australia, but Volkswagen commercial vehicles’ hesitance towards electrification Down Under likely rules out the fully electric set-up in the short term.

Volkswagen has released studio images of its Multivan T6.1, showing a new look with a redesigned grille, sportier lower body pieces and new LED headlight and tail-light signatures.

Standard on the new Multivan is an updated dashboard, child protection locks for the doors, a leather-trimmed multifunction steering wheel, decorative trim pieces and additional USB ports in the passenger compartment.

Meanwhile, Volkswagen Group board member Heinz-Jürgen Löw confirmed that the Transporter will also receive a lift to standard specification.

“We have rounded out the Transporter’s specification of standard features with electric windows, central locking, electrically adjustable and heated exterior mirrors, new H7 headlights, interior lights with more energy-efficient LED technology, and a radio system with a Bluetooth hands-free unit,” he said.

Current T6 vans are priced from $37,490 plus on-road costs for the Transporter, $52,590 for the Caravelle and $53,590 for the base Multivan.

The Transporter was the brand’s best-selling van in Australia last year, with 2095 vehicles registered, while the Multivan mustered 1095 sales and just 125 were recorded for the Caravelle.
