Volkswagen Transporter teased

Dubbed Transporter: A single teaser image has offered a first insight to the sixth-generation Volkswagen Transporter, but the front end is still under wraps.

First look at the next-gen Volkswagen Transporter ahead of April reveal

20 Mar 2015

VOLKSWAGEN has offered a glimpse of its sixth-generation Transporter van, with a single sketch released ahead of the vehicle’s official debut in April.

Just a rear view of the new Transporter was teased, but with unfeasibly large wheels, the image appears to preview a concept and not a final production version.

Its as-yet unseen front end is expected to be closely related to the Tristar concept displayed by Volkswagen at the Frankfurt motor show last year, while its underpinnings are said to be based on the company's flexible MQB platform.

That vehicle wore revised styling and sharpened LED headlights aligning with the company's evolving aesthetics, while blending in a high-riding off-roader look and chunky tyres.

When the T6 Transporter replaces it, the T5 version will be 12 years old. Currently it is available in long and short wheelbases, and as a cab chassis variant with two or four wheel drive.

No details have been released with the image, but the replacement version is expected to continue the diesel-only line-up in Australia, along with a similar choice of bodystyles including a Crewvan minibus as featured in the first image.

Expect Caravelle and Multivan nameplates to make a return with the new version, as well.

Quite which features will carry over from the Tristar concept remains to be seen, but its espresso machine and 20-inch tablet table are not high on the likely list. The neat interior with typical Volkswagen dash with large touchscreen are possibilities.

The official reveal will take place at a special event in Amsterdam on April 16, with the first production examples rolling into showrooms across Europe later in the year.
