A complete redesign, the Mk2 Lantra eschewed its predecessor’s five-door notchback configuration for more traditional four-door sedan and – from July ’96 – “Sportswagon” variants.
It was also a significant step up in space, dynamics and refinement.
Its flagrantly ovoid exterior styling theme continued inside, while a revised 1.8L engine now produced 94kW of power.
A base SE model joined the GL and GLS stalwarts from July ’96, while the luxury Levant disappeared.
A limited edition “Classique” sedan with anti-lock brakes and air-conditioning arrived in late ’96.
Another short-run special called Sportz debuted in November ’98.
